How were the guidelines were created?
Inclusion International and Down Syndrome worked together to create the guidelines.
Our members saw the need for practical guidelines on how to make sure people with intellectual disabilities are included in the work of organisations.
We got information about why people with intellectual disabilities are excluded and how we can make sure they can participate from over 1,500 people around the world!
350 organisations from nearly 100 different countries contributed to the work:
We got this information by:
Collecting stories through a global survey in 10 languages online and in Easy Read.
Supported our members to run 60 consultation meetings with self-advocates to learn about their experiences
Asked for feedback from experts on topics like inclusion of people with higher support needs from around the world
Worked with a reference group of people with intellectual disabilities, their families, and other experts to help review the guidelines and give feedback at every stage
Tested the guidelines through 7 projects to make sure the advice was good at our own organisations and with outside organisations.
